As with most appliances, refrigerators face a host of issues during their lifetimes. Most can be rectified with cleaning or other quick fixes, while others require the replacement or repair of parts.
Refrigerator Not Cooling
It may be in diagnostic mode. This typically occurs after the refrigerator has been serviced. Reset the unit by disconnecting the power. Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect it.
The temperature controls were bumped. For a dial, turn the knob one number higher for a cooler temperature. For a thermostat setting, turn the refrigerator down to the desired temperature.
The seals are broken. A refrigerator relies on seals to maintain a steady temperature; if the doors aren’t closed tightly, cold air escapes. Professionals can install new seals to rectify the issue.
Strange Noises
Clicking: Long-term clicking indicates that the temperature control or defroster may need service. It could also be tied an issue with the compressor if the noises last for longer than five minutes.
Whistling: Continuous whistling shows that the fan blade in the condenser, compressor, or evaporator is loose. The fan blade may need repaired or replaced.
Refrigerator Isn’t Working at All
Evaporator fan is stuck or broken. If the compressor is running yet the fridge isn’t cooling, the fan for the evaporator is the most likely cause, especially if squealing or chirping sounds are present, and become louder, when you open the freezer door. This can also be caused by the defrosting unit not operating properly. Professionals can repair or replace the fan or defrosting unit.
Condenser fan is stuck or broken. If the compressor doesn’t start running when the door to the refrigerator is open for four to five minutes, the fan may be worn out or the compressor itself has gone bad. This can indicate the fan, relay or compressor requires service.
Leaking Refrigerator
Water underneath the refrigerator could indicate a clogged drain hole. Push a pipe cleaner through the drain hole in the rear of the unit and then pour soapy water down the hole. Continue this process until there’s soapy water in the pan, indicating the drain is clear. If this doesn’t work, a professional cleaning is in order.
Icemaker Not Working
A non-working icemaker is usually the result of a dirty filter or low water pressure. Check for sediment buildup inside of the filter and replace it if necessary. Check the water pressure by dispensing water into a measuring cup for 20 seconds. If it measures less than 1 2/3-cups, your water pressure is likely the issue.
